High Wheelers win the series 4-2
Davis, Ca.---Yolo High Wheelers (27-25; 4-2) starting pitcher Cameron Repetti (5-1) won his third straight start as he defeated the Oakland Ballers (29-25; 2-4) 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. The right-hander struck out eight and had his third straight seven-inning performance. His five wins match Jack Zalasky for most on the team. Repetti's ERA drops to 4.03, tops in the Pioneer League while against Oakland he is 4-0, 2.01 over five starts.
"Oakland is a good hitting team, I just trust my defense, and pound the zone and let the pitches fall where they may," Repetti said. He talked about the game calling from catcher Angel Mendoza, "we're always on the same page, he's caught all of my starts. We workout together in the off-season and have a really good rapport. I trust that guy with everything he puts down."
The only runs Repetti allowed were in the first inning. Oakland left fielder Payton Harden led off the game with a first pitch single to center. Designated hitter Noah Martinez followed with a double while center fielder Austin Davis grounded out to short driving in Harden. Right fielder Trevor Halsema delivered an RBI single, capping the scoring.
In the second, the High Wheelers took the lead for good with three runs. Third baseman Braedon Blackford led off with a double. First baseman Alejandro Figueredo extended his hitting streak to seven with an RBI single making it 2-1 Ballers. Two batters later, second baseman Kirkland Banks (7) belted a two-run homer to left giving the High Wheelers the lead for good, making it 3-2. The High Wheelers extended the lead to 4-2 on a homer to left by shortstop Braylin Marine (7) in the third.
Banks spoke of his homer, "I was just trying to help my team as best I can." "I was seeing the ball well all day, and when I came to the ballpark today, I was just full of energy. We call this Sunday 'Fun Day' and I felt like it was going to be a good day. Cam (starting pitcher Cam Repetti) did his thing, he was locked in and it was a great team win."
Yolo newcomer Reed Garland worked out of a jam with runners at second and two out in his team debut pitching the eighth. Ty Buckner (5) earned his team-high fifth save with a perfect ninth.
Justin Kleinsorge (0-3) lost his second game of this series to Repetti. The Oakland starter went five innings (plus), allowed nine hits, four runs (all earned) and struck out seven-- a season-best for him.
Yolo wins this series 4-2. The teams have Monday off, and will reconvene in Davis on Tuesday afternoon with a 4:30 first pitch. Right-hander Carson Lambert will start for Oakland and Yolo will counter with righty Brandon McPherson.
